New Cumberland is a borough of 7,507 people (2020) in eastern Cumberland County, incorporated on March 21, 1831. The borough sits across the Susquehanna from Harrisburg's southern end, near the Defense Distribution Center, and many homes were built for workers there over the decades. Narrow lots near the river mean basements sit close to the water table.
What that means for your plumbing
New Cumberland has a historic downtown and many older homes with aging laterals and supply lines. Sewer camera inspections and repiping are common; see sewer laterals. Borough Park and the riverfront are popular gathering spots.
River and creek
Where Yellow Breeches Creek meets the Susquehanna, low ground and high water tables challenge basements. Many homes date to the borough's growth after the Civil War, when lumber gave way to other trades.
Many names
The town was Shawneetown, Chartiers Landing, Lowther Manor, Haldeman's Town and Cumberland before becoming New Cumberland in 1827. The river and creek made it a harbor for lumber rafting, with sawmills and a grain mill. Its West Shore Theater and Apple Festival draw visitors. Old homes here often need drain work; see drain cleaning. The yearly Apple Festival brings hundreds of vendors and thousands of visitors.
